For Immediate Release: 27th March 2013
The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET), joins in congratulating Her Excellency Mary Robinson on her appointment as UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region of Africa.
FEMNET lauds this very first appointment of a woman as UN Special Envoy, a great landmark for women worldwide.
We recognize the extensive experience and exemplary leadership that H.E. Mary Robinson has demonstrated in the past in passionately advocating for peace building and human rights, and more so her tenacity in promoting theinclusion of women in the peace processes and the implementation of the Peace, Security and Cooperation Framework for the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Great Lakes region of Africa.
Additionally, we are confident that H.E. Mary Robinson will deliver on her promises, and will continue to promote the agenda for women’s rights and gender equality. By and large, FEMNET is keen to see Mary Robinson respond swiftly and efficiently to turbulent crisis in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Central African Republic (CAR), Mali, South Sudan, Sudan and Somalia. Armed Conflict Location and Event Dataset (ACLED)provides near real-time tracking of armed conflict in Africa, with monthly updated data, displaying more than 60,000 armed conflict events from 1997 to 2013. Needless to say, hope abides and there are numerous opportunities for African leaders and her citizenry to improve on the advancing positive growth rate.
FEMNET stands ready to support H.E. Mary Robinson in her new appointment, especially in the area of advancing women’s leadership and empowerment which is one of FEMNET’s area of focus.
