CSW 57 Report

The fifty-seventh session of the Commission on the Status of Women took place at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 4 to 15 March 2013. The priority theme was the Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls with a review Theme discussing the equal sharing of responsibilities between women and men, including care giving in the context of HIV/AIDS. Women from all over the world met in side events, caucuses, workshops and consultations, exchanging best practices, listening and learning from each other.
The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) co-organized a side event on March 4, 2013 and four sessions of the African Women’s Caucus (AWC) on 4th, 8th, 11th and 13th of March 2013. Members also engaged in lobbying, participated in external meetings, facilitated communications and exchange of information, drafted and revised the Oral Statement, the Position Statement and the Outcome Document and oversaw the launch of the NGO CSW Africa. FEMNET has in the past worked with the government of Kenya during the CSW preparatory activities. As a result, a staff was accredited and included in the official Government delegation to the 57th Session on the CSW. This gave FEMNET the opportunity to access and influence the negotiations in New York in an unprecedented manner.
