#UNCTAD14 Side Event on Gender & Trade: Alternative Realities for A Transformative Economy
The ongoing UNCTAD-14 provides a platform through which women’s organizations can contribute to the discussion on international trade policies and the impact the policies have on women as well as provide alternatives through which trade can be used as a catalyst for women’s economic empowerment. Increasing the role of women in the economy is part of the solution to the financial and economic crises and critical for economic resilience and growth.
On Wednesday 20th July 2016, from 1630hrs – 1800hrs at the CSO Tent 4, Join the discussion on the following topics:-
- What are some of the human rights norms and standards through which gender discrimination in and through trade can be addressed?
- How can developing countries ensure policy coherence towards gender-sensitive and socially inclusive development outcomes?
- How appropriate is it to use the “smart economy” approach to advocate for gender equality and women’s economic empowerment?
- The Sustainable Development Goals do not make an explicit link between gender equality, women’s economic empowerment and trade. Would implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals at the national level provide the setting for making this link explicit?
- UNCTAD going ahead, what should they consider in their mandate to deliver and move from decisions to action?
