The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) is a regional, membership-based non-governmental organization (NGO). It operates through Sub-regional and National Focal Points (NFP) most of which are women’s network or umbrella organizations. FEMNET was set up in 1988 to share information, experiences, ideas and strategies among African women’s NGOs as a strategy for strengthening women’s capacity to participate effectively the development of our continent. This is done through advocacy, capacity building, communication and networking.
FEMNET (The African Women’s Development and Communication Network) is a feminist, pan-African organization with over 500 individual and institutional members in 43 countries in Africa and in the diaspora working to amplify African women’s voices and advance women’s rights.
Established in 1988 with her secretariat based in Nairobi, Kenya, FEMNET continues to strengthen the role and contribution of African CSOs focusing on women's rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment. Over the years FEMNET has played a central role in facilitating the sharing of information, experiences, ideas and strategies among African women's NGOs and individual activists as a strategy for strengthening women’s capacity to participate effectively in development processes at different levels.
FEMNET has played a lead role in building the women's movement in Africa and has ensured that African women voices are amplified and influence decisions made at national, regional and global levels, which have direct and indirect impact on their lives.
Following the development of its Strategic Plan for the period 2014-2018 , the following Vision, Mission and Core Values will guide FEMNET.

The Women’s Decade played a very critical role, not for Government but for the women. Women‘s awareness came to the fore and they had the official space to organize, network and mobilize each other…When we formed the Kenya NGO Organizing Committee, we did not have an agenda. However, we soon began to understand our role and organized ourselves for the meeting in Arusha. When we came back from Arusha, we had an additional mandate to help African women organize themselves to come to Nairobi…After the Nairobi Forum, we had to create FEMNET and I remember sitting over nights to write proposals and the constitution to register FEMNET in order to have an office space, but in the mean time we used to meet here. This very veranda – is where FEMNET was born… Our driving force was how to get maximum voices from the African continent in Nairobi (‘85) and beyond for at that time the African woman’s voice was not heard in the international arenas.”

Institutional Development & Coordination Team
Dinah Musindarwezo, (Rwanda/Kenya) is the Executive Director. She is a gender equality advocate with over ten years of experience working on issues of gender and development, women’s empowerment and human rights at national, regional (Africa) and international levels. Dinah is a feminist who is passionate about advocating for gender justice and equal rights for all. She is open-minded, positive and eager to learn from others as she believes that learning is an endless journey. Dinah is a member of UN Women Africa Regional Civil Society Advisory Group, is a Co-Chair of NGOCSW Africa and a Board member of Center for Citizens’ Participation at African Union (CCP-AU). She holds a Master’s degree in Gender and Development from the Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex, UK, and a Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies from Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. Rose Akinyi, (Kenya) is the Executive Office Manager. She is a holder of a Diploma in Business Management. She has been with FEMNET since 1995 and plays a central role in facilitating all the Program Staff to do their work and ensures a smooth running of the Secretariat. Martin Odera, (Kenya) is the Finance Manager. He is a holder of a Bachelors Degree in Economics and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). He has been with FEMNET since 2004. He coordinates the financial and accounting activities. His duties include coordinating development of strategic budgets, financial reports and accounting for internal and external uses, coordinating audit processes, coordinates procurement activities (he is the procurement focal person), setting up and maintaining the financial, administration policies and procedures and strategies (including designing internal control system and subsequent management), monitoring and evaluating organisation’s incomes and expenditures against approved budgets and reporting on the variances (variance analysis); Conducting risk assessments (risk analysis, monitoring and mitigation) including setting up risk registers). Mary Thiang’au, (Kenya) is the Finance Officer. She is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K) – Section II and holder of a Diploma in Gender and Development. Kennedy Otina, (Kenya) is the Programme Associate for the Men to Men Regional Programme. He has been with FEMNET since 2004. Ken’s main role is to coordinate the scaling up of the Men to Men programme to cover Uganda, Malawi, Mali, Tanzania, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since 2013, he has been working with religious and cultural leaders in Tharaka-nithi and Homabay counties in Kenya to enhance capacities and champion the ending of socio-cultural practices deeply-rooted in their communities such as female genital mutilation (FGM) and wife inheritance as a strategy to promote sexual and reproductive rights for women and girls. Rachel Kagoiya, (Kenya) is the Information Manager. Rachel manages the production, repackaging and dissemination of various knowledge and information products including the monthly E-Bulletins, website, blog page, social media platforms, and the Gender & Development Resource Centre. Rachel describes herself as a passionate advocate for women’s rights, climate justice and a great team leader with strong organizing and interpersonal skills. She is a holder of a Bachelors Degree in Education and Masters in Library & Information Science. She has been with FEMNET since June 2006.
