How to manage your health during the holidays

christmas-holiday-scaleThe leaves of the calendar just quickly went off the wall and now we are heading for shorter days as the holidays are fast approaching. It is also a season of family dinners, corporate parties, and a season where we just have a bit too much on the dining table. So, our jeans seem to get tighter. Now, how do you keep your weight down during this season of merry making?

Here are your keys to keeping that weight in control:

Awareness

It will help if you remain conscious of what you eat. You do not have to deprive yourself of all the goodies of the season but keep yourself in check. Try smaller portions instead of bigger servings. It does not mean that you can do anything that you want because it’s the holiday season. You also need to be realistic. You might want to consider maintaining your current weight instead of forcing the issue to lose the extra poundage.

Remind yourself that you need to move a lot thru the day. Since you will be enjoyingmore holiday dishes, exert much effort to do some brisk walking or walk around while talking over the phone. Instead of using the elevator, hit the stairs.

Manage your emotions and stress

Set realistic expectations during the holidays, this way you are also managing your stress level. If you need help with some preparations, ask for help. Try to lighten your schedule if you can.

You can also say no to parties, engagements, and other activities which you really cannot attend to or which do not interest you. If you are a bit sad about something during the holidays, turn to your friends or family and not to food. Another good way to manage your emotions is to keep exercise among your top priorities.

Plan ahead

Before going to a party, eat a little so you can check your appetite one you get to the gathering. If you are enjoying a buffet, head out as soon as you are done to avoid food temptation. Think of what’s most important during the season so you can plan appropriately. Let go of things which can clogged up your schedule and also make sure you find time to exercise.
