Kisumu County Launches New Vocational and Training (VET) Policy

Kisumu County, on 26th July 2024, took a significant step towards empowering its youth with the launch of the Kisumu County Vocational and Training (VET) Policy. The event, graced by the Deputy Governor, Dr. Mathew Ochieng Owili, marked a pivotal moment in the county’s commitment to skills development and job creation. 

In his keynote address, the Deputy Governor emphasized the policy’s role in bridging the gap between education and employment as well as the county government’s dedication to investing in the youth as the bedrock of our future. The Deputy Governor also highlighted the policy’s alignment with the national government’s agenda of empowering the marginalized and vulnerable. 

The new VET policy aims to enhance access to quality vocational training, improve the relevance of training to the job market, and strengthen partnerships between training institutions and the private sector. Key components of the policy include: 

  • Expanding vocational training opportunities in various sectors such as agriculture, technology, and hospitality. 
  • Strengthening industry partnerships to provide practical training and job placements. 
  • Investing in modern equipment and facilities for vocational training institutions. 
  • Providing financial support to vulnerable youth to access vocational training. 

Speaking during the launch, The Executive Director of The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) Memory Kachambwa, expressed optimism about the policy’s potential to transform the lives of young people, especially young African women and Girls in Kisumu County.  

“This policy is a game-changer,” she said. “It will equip our young African women and girls and the youth in general with the skills they need to succeed in the job market and contribute to the county’s economic growth.” 

The event brought together key stakeholders including county officials, education practitioners, private sector representatives, and youth representatives. Participants expressed their enthusiasm for the policy and pledged their support for its implementation. 

As Kisumu County embarks on this new chapter of vocational education and training, the expectations are high. With the right implementation strategies and sustained commitment, the county can position itself as a leader in skills development and youth empowerment.
