FEMNET is proud to participate in the 7th GIMAC/RECs and Partners Coordination Meeting, taking place from 6–10 July 2025 at the Bisila Palace Hotel in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. Held under the African Union’s 2025 theme, Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations, the convening brings together civil society, regional economic communities, and AU partners to chart pathways for transformative gender justice and reparative governance across Africa.
This year’s theme, Transforming Policy into Action: Advancing Gender Justice and Reparations for Africans with Regional Economic Committees, echoes FEMNET’s longstanding commitment to dismantling colonial legacies, challenging economic injustice, and amplifying feminist alternatives rooted in care, equity, and accountability.
As a key highlight, FEMNET will host a breakout session on Wednesday, 9 July 2025 (9:30am–11:00am) under the Economic Justice and Rights cluster to launch its groundbreaking background paper: Pan-African Feminist Perspectives on Justice Through Reparations. This publication explores how neo-colonial systems continue to marginalize African women and girls, while proposing bold, feminist-led reparative frameworks that extend beyond monetary compensation to include debt cancellation, gender-responsive budgeting, and feminist-led reparations commissions.
FEMNET will also contribute to three thematic clusters—Young Women, Economic Justice, and Climate Justice—bringing the voices and demands of African women and girls into continental advocacy. These clusters will address critical issues such as unpaid care work, land justice, climate financing, and youth-led intergenerational leadership models.
In line with our advocacy goals, FEMNET aims to:
- Amplify feminist perspectives on reparations through the presentation of our background paper.
- Mobilize support for inclusive, gender-transformative reparations frameworks.
- Share key recommendations from the 2025 Girls & Young Women Festival held in Nairobi.
- Influence the final Malabo Declaration by embedding feminist reparations language across cluster position papers.
As a pan-African feminist network, FEMNET remains committed to holding systems accountable and co-creating a just future that centres African women and girls in all their diversity. The GIMAC/RECs meeting in Malabo presents an opportunity to build momentum for reparative justice rooted in care, equity, and intergenerational solidarity.
