1. About FEMNET.

The African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) is a pan- African, feminist and membership-based network based in Nairobi, Kenya with over 800 individual and institutional members across 50 African countries and in the diaspora. FEMNET envisions a society where African women and girls thrive in dignity and well-being, free from patriarchal and neoliberal oppression and injustices.

Over the years, FEMNET has strategically positioned herself as a convener, organizer and facilitator of critical dialogues around women’s economic justice and rights; transformative women’s leadership; sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR); climate justice and natural resource governance as well as, ending all forms of violence and harmful/ discriminatory practices against women and girls.

FEMNET continues to be intentional in influencing decisions made at national, regional and global levels, constantly ensuring African women voices are amplified and their needs, priorities and aspirations are prioritized in key policy dialogues and outcomes that have direct and indirect impact on their lives. 2. Background of the Project.

Despite the progressive EVAWG (Elimination of Violence Against Women and Girls) and SRH&RR (Sexual and Reproductive Health and Reproductive Rights) policies and frameworks put in place to address Women Rights issues in the continent, there remains the existence of conservative and restrictive policies that effectively reinforce binary norms that favor stereotypical gender roles and exclude young women from decision- making power over their bodies and sexuality. FEMNET, in partnership with HIVOS (Lead consortium partner), Positive Vibes, Restless Development, Fondo Centroamericano de Mujeres (FCAM), and MARSA, are implementing the ‘We Lead, claiming our Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights’ is a 5-year project, funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the government of Netherlands. The We Lead project seeks to strengthen the potential of rightsholder organizations to both claim a more prominent role in broader SRH-R and human rights advocacy spaces and develop and pursue their own advocacy agenda.

3. Objective/ Purpose of Assignment

The consultant will coordinate a 4-day participatory and interactive training for healthcare providers in Nigeria and will work closely with the Community of Action, Community of Action Facilitator and FEMNET’s We Lead Coordinator to co-create the agenda. The consultant is also expected to meaningfully engage with the 10 healthcare providers and 10 rights holders to simulate discussions using various innovative techniques that can be employed in a safe space.

The primary roles will be to:

  • Conduct Values Clarification and Attitude Transformation Sessions for healthcare providers
  • Share existing data and information on young women SRHR trends in Nigeria with a focus on the We Lead rightsholder groups
  • Facilitate sessions on unpacking diversity to challenge existing attitudes and biases among healthcare providers.
  • Train on rightsholder-friendly service provision while employing behavior change communication strategies
  • Facilitate discussions on diversity and inclusivity in healthcare service provision.
  • Facilitate dialogue session with between healthcare providers and rightsholders

4. Scope of Work and Terms of Reference.

  • The consultant will co-create the healthcare provider training agenda with the SRHR Lead and adopt a participatory training approach in driving discussions on diversity and rightsholder friendly service provision.
  • The consultant will conduct pre and post capacity assessments for all participants
  • The consultant will conduct a VCAT session for healthcare providers
  • The consultant will coordinate the healthcare provider training on unpacking diversity
  • The consultant will implement the training while embracing the highest value of feminist principles.
  • The consultant will ensure that the reflection sessions include the diverse realities of stakeholders and African women.
  • The consultant will consolidate a report on the 4-day training.

5. Required Qualification, Skills, and Competencies.

The call is open to consultant/s able to demonstrate the following skills, knowledge, and experience.

Academic Qualification

Minimum of an undergraduate degree in biological sciences, sexual and reproductive health and rights or related field and a master’s degree in a relevant discipline, with  progressive experience in sexual reproductive health and rights program management.

Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in conducting capacity needs assessment, design of training manuals/tools, and facilitation of SRHR capacity building trainings for healthcare providers in East Africa.
  • At least 5 years conducting Values Clarification and Attitude Transformation sessions for healthcare providers
  • 3-5 years training on behavior change communication and employing BCC strategies in trainings
  • Thorough understanding of youth friendly service provision and training of healthcare providers on YFS
  • 5-10 years engaging with grassroots and community SRHR healthcare providers.
  • Thorough understanding of safety and security for SRHR advocates
  • Current knowledge of the latest developments and trends in the field of SRHR
  • Experience in conducting SRHR advocacy training through use of creative and participatory methodologies.
  • Strong writing skills, and experience of presenting complex technical information and content in a user friendly or in an easily comprehensible way for non-specialist readers.

Technical Expertise

  • Have extensive understanding of SRHR, VCAT and Behavior Change Communication.
  • Have good writing skills (summary notes, reports).
  • Have strong communication skills and be able to lead/facilitate trainings.

6. Duration of Assignment.

This is a 6-day assignment, with 1 day for preparation, 4 days for facilitation from 18th to 21st November 2024 and 1 day for report writing and consolidation.

7. Liaison, Coordination and Reporting.

The consultant will report to the SRHR Lead and will work closely with the FEMNET secretariat.

8. Selection of Consultant.

The consultant shall be contracted by FEMNET. The contract will include a Withholding Tax (WHT) deduction in line with the laws of contracting where FEMNET is headquartered. A WHT certificate will be issued to the consultant. Payment will be made through bank transfer to the consultant bank account. FEMNET will not meet the costs of bank charges. The payment schedule will be agreed upon with the consultant upon successful selection. In the case of team/firm applicants, a designated assignment contract manager will be the contact between FEMNET and the team and responsible for all deliverables.

9. Intellectual Property Rights.

The consultant expressly assigns to FEMNET any copyright arising from the outputs produced while executing the service contract.  The consultant may not use, reproduce, disseminate, or authorize others to use, reproduce or disseminate any output produced under the service contract without prior consent from FEMNET.

10. Terms of Service.

This is a non-staff contract and therefore the consultant is not entitled to insurance, medical cover or any other status or conditions as FEMNET staff.
